Editorial Book: I'm an Asshole Okay
This book uses the Gabourey Sidibe's 2014 speech at the Ms.Foundation Gala; I found the speech insightful and moving as she self proclaims herself an "asshole." Transforming her auditory speech into a physical book; I created a motif of expanding type to capture her overflowing confidence amidst the obstacles of eurocentric beauty standards and fatphobic rhetoric she faces.  The book was created to similarly embody the actress's confidence using bold color and type to be a reminder to other marginalized identities to live an existence that purposely takes up space.
This laser cut cover immediately introduces readers to the core themes pushing against boundaries by using the title set in a block format that reflects my global layout. Neon pink and lilac are used to match the tone of the actress speech: bold but fun. I want people to see the importance of discovering, taking up space as not uncomfortable but necessary.
This is the only photo used in this book. It serves as a visual reference directly to this page, but also just like this one image influenced the actress childhood this image shows how powerful representation can leave a lasting impact.
